Intro To Backcountry Skiing

The Intro to Backcountry Skiing program is designed for skiers and riders with little or no experience in the backcountry. If you want to transition from skiing the resort to skiing out of bounds, this day long clinic is designed for you. Our intro tours include instruction on skinning, downhill techniques, safe route finding, basic avalanche procedures and more.


The skiing takes place on easily accessed terrain and feature low angle, open and rolling terrain with low avalanche danger suitable for a wide range of abilities. The typical day will include several runs on various aspects and approximately 2,000 – 3,000 feet of climbing and skiing. There will be plenty of time to stop for lunch breaks and to enjoy the amazing scenery that the Wasatch has to offer!

  • Intro to equipment and procedures for travel in avalanche terrain
  • Basic use of skins and touring equipment
  • Reading the avalanche forecast and choosing a safe route
  • How to make proper kick turns
  • How to transition to downhill mode
  • Descent procedures in avalanche terrain
  • Techniques for skiing and boarding in untracked and powder snow
  • Personalized ski coaching and instruction

Difficulty: No backcountry experience necessary; intermediate downhill ski ability and good fitness level.

Meeting Time: Usually around 8 am
Meeting Location: Big or Little Cottonwood Park and Ride Lot, Alta or Brighton, depending on conditions.
Lift assisted tour: Price of lift ticket is additional.
